Who is Sunita Dangol?


Sunita Dangol is the 14 th Kathmandu Deputy Mayor. She first joined the world of politics as a cultural activist and won Miss Newa 2011 and eventually established a cultural organization named Callijatra to uphold the Newar culture. Furthermore, Sunita Dangol was studying a Bachelor of Biotechnology and a master degree in social work, which successfully fitted her education with serving the society. By 2022, she became a member of the CPN-UML and became the winner of the deputy mayoral election with the highest margin in Nepal of all the municipalities. She is nowadays a Young Global Leader, who initiates the practices on urban development, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation in Kathmandu.

Early Life and Education:

Sunita Dangol was born on May 18, 1993, in Kathmandu, and she spent her childhood in a Newar family. She was studying on a scholarship at a tender age, and this gave her the avenue to further studies. She later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and Master’s degree in Social Work.

Political Career:

Suunita Dangol started her political life as an independent candidate, and she later joined CPN-UML during the deputy mayoral election of 2022. She concentrated on the youth during the campaign, cultural conservation, and inclusive city building. With the help of social media and gr.

Sunita Dangol had been interested in politics, and in early 2022, she officially declared her bid to be a Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu on the CPN-UML. Her motto was Heritage, Youth, Action, which was aimed at cultural preservation, empowerment of the youth, and physical city enhancement.

1. Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

She has been actively promoting and protecting the cultural sites in the city, and she established a youth-led project, Callijatra, to help preserve the local scripts.

2. Youth Involvement and Capacity Building:

Dangol has initiated different programs to attract the young people of Kathmandu. She hosted the Women of World Festival 2024 (WOW Nepal 2024) and has participated in projects that promote the involvement of youth in the development of cities.

3. City projects, Infrastructure projects:

Along with Mayor Balen Shah, she has also presided over projects that will enhance the infrastructure of the city, such as the Dust-Free Road project of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Masterplan, which is concerned with the quality of the roads and pollution.

In 2025, Dangol was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in the domain of her work in the field of urban development, empowerment of youth, and cultural heritage preservation.

  • In 2025, she supported suspended officer Saroj Guragain, causing tensions in KMC.
  • She criticized Mayor Balen  Shah for unilateral riverbank buffer decisions.
  • She opposed the Kathmandu Tower project, citing misuse of public land.
  • Some actions aligned with party interests, drawing partisanship criticism.
