Dawa Phuti died early, but not before giving birth to two daughters. His second wife was Ang Lahmu, who also died young. He ultimately married Dakku and was blessed with three more children. Always remaining a family man, Tenzing loved his children, relishing his experience with them in telling stories of his climbing experience. Following this climb, Tenzing settled in Darjeeling, where he would live out the remainder of his days while working as Director of Field Training for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Here, he trained new generations of climbers with vigor, passing on knowledge and passion for the mountains.
Death and Legacy
Tenzing Norgay died on May 9, 1986, in Darjeeling, at the age of 71. His passing was a seismic loss for the world of mountaineering, but his indelible legacy carries on.
